The Taproom distributes over seven-thousand barrels of beer every year. Over the last three years, Hector has been a fucking genius at increasing production capability. The business is his baby. The brewing is mine.
A large portion of our grain is grown and malted right here in North Carolina. I also only work with fruits and vegetables I can get locally in this region. Iâm loyal, so my customers are loyal. The fire is a setback. Not having The Taproom open for on-premises sales isnât going to make us go under. Even if it is depressing as hell.
Brewing beer is my job, watching people enjoy drinking it is my reward. I miss the shit out of that. I tell myself weâll be up and running again soon enough. For now, I need to stay focused on what I do best.
âWhat do you think about using Torulaspora?â
Hector eyes me. âI think the production guys are gone, the contractor is gone, and itâs time for us to go too.â
âIâm serious.â
He quirks an eyebrow. I fucking hate when he does that. It means something sarcastic is about to come out of his mouth. âYou want our beer to smell like apples?â
Since Torulaspora is a yeast derived from apple skins, I would say yes.
âMaybe. It would be different. We could lay down a few barrels and see how it goes.â
âYeah. Okay. Letâs do it.â His eyes narrow. âTell me you werenât sitting here staring off into space thinking about beer.â He chuckles and shakes his head then pulls a piece of gum from the pack in his pocket. âJesus, you need therapy. Or pussy.â He tips his head from side-to-side as if heâs weighing the options. âProbably pussy.â
He has no idea how right he is. My balls feel like theyâre full of concrete.
âCan I ask you a hypothetical question?â
He opens the wrapper of a piece of Juicy Fruit and shoves the gum in his mouth. âIs it about the hypothetical brunette?â
âI said itâs hypothetical. Itâs not about anyone.â
He laughs. âWell, if youâre asking if you should hypothetically fuck her, hereâs my answer: If you donât, I will.â
I grab him by the shirt and get in his face. âI can kick your ass, Hero, and you better not fucking forget it.â
Hector is every bit as much of an asshole as I am. The difference is, Iâm usually more level-headed. Too bad I reacted before I figured out what the hell he was doing. He was baiting me. Fucker.
I unfist my hand from his shirt then back away. âSorry.â
âAnd thereâs your answer. You donât get that worked up over anything except beer.â
Heâs right, as usual, so I just reply with a grunt.
Hector claps my shoulder. âI think we both need a drink.â I look around the brewery like what the fuck do you think this is? âA drink with other people,â he adds.
Twenty minutes later, weâre pulling up at Shooters.
Inside the bar, the flat screens are all tuned into the game. A few guys in T-shirts and baseball caps are playing pool.
